For most of her acting career, Jennifer Lopez’s characters have been on the right side of the law. But that’s going to change in NBC’s Shades of Blue, a new police drama that casts Lopez in the lead as a dirty cop.
In the series, Lopez portrays New York City police detective Harlee Santos, a single mother who also happens to be a key member in a ring of corrupt cops loyal to Lt. Bill Wozniak (Ray Liotta). NBC has debuted the first trailer for Shades of Blue, and it demonstrates just how dirty Santos can be when she covers up a deadly mistake by her partner, Michael Loman (Dayo Okeniyi) with no outward sign of remorse.
However, Shades of Blue also finds an angle on Lopez’s character that may force her to act more heroically, as the FBI essentially blackmails her into investigating her own crew and betraying her mentor. And as the footage suggests, Wozniak is a very dangerous man to cross…
Shades of Blue will be Lopez’s second starring role in a TV series. Back in 1993, Lopez was one of the stars of CBS’ short-lived drama Second Chances/Hotel Malibu and one of the original Fly Girls on Fox’s In Living Color. However, Lopez is primarily known for feature film roles, her singing career, and her stint on Fox’s American Idol as one of the judges.
Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy) co-stars in Shades of Blue as Det. Tess Nazario, with Vincent Laresca as Det. Tony Espada, Warren Kole as FBI Agent Robert Staal, and Sarah Jeffery as Christine Santos, the daughter of Lopez’s character.
The 13 episode first season of Shades of Blue will premiere on NBC on January 14, 2016.
