Free Download: Radiohead Surprise Fans With ‘Spectre’ Rejected James Bond Theme

Sam Smith may have recorded the official Spectre theme in ”Writing’s on the Wall,” but a number of artists tried their hand at crafting a new 007 anthem. While Radiohead was among those heavily rumored to be in the runnings, no trace of the alleged song had surfaced – until now.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke confirmed Friday that the band did “write a tune” for the film, and in true Christmas spirit, the band shared their melodramatic, orchestral version of the theme, titled “Spectre,” with fans.

“Last year we were asked to write a tune for Bond movie Spectre. Yes we were,” Yorke tweeted. “It didn’t work out … but became something of our own which we love very much. As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it. Merry Christmas. May the force be with you.” Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich added in his own tweet, “Merry Christmas everyone!!”

“Spectre” is the latest offering of new material from the band, after Yorke premiered “Desert Island Disk” and “Silent Spring,” two new songs expected to appear on the band’s follow-up to 2011’s The King of Limbs. “Spectre” is currently available as a free download through the band’s SoundCloud account.
