Last year, BBC announced a new Doctor Who spinoff series called Class. The series will take place at Coal Hill School, which was introduced in the very first episode of Doctor Who. Former companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) taught at Coal Hill, but she won’t be appearing in Class for reasons that should be obvious to fans who saw the final episodes of Doctor Who Season 9.
At the TCA Press Tour, BBC President Sarah Barnett revealed that Class will premiere on BBC America in 2016. The series will be written by YA author Patrick Ness, and it is his first screenwriting credit. No actors have been cast, and the characters are currently unrevealed.
“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself,” said Ness in a statement. “I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your exams.”

Previous Doctor Who spinoffs in the modern era include Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Chronicles. But those shows had the benefit of established Doctor Who characters in the cast. Class may not have any regular cast members who have appeared on Doctor Who before.
The first season of Class will run eight episodes. It will begin production later this year.
