After three feature films, it seemed like the Punisher just couldn’t catch a break in Hollywood. But before the Punisher returns from an eight year absence from live action, he’s already on the brink of getting a new TV series!
According to TVLine, Netflix and Marvel TV are so excited about Jon Bernthal’s performance as the Punisher in Daredevil season 2 that there’s already buzz about the Punisher getting his own spinoff series on Netflix.
In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bernthal credited new Daredevil showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez for the way that they crafted the Punisher’s storyline in the upcoming season.
“I can’t give too much away, said Bernthal. “But what’s interesting is the way [Petrie and Ramirez] have made his story a slow burn. It’s interesting to find this guy at the point we find him. You want an evolution and a process. He starts in one place and will end up in another.”

Bernthal also indicated that the Punisher’s backstory as Frank Castle will largely remain intact on the series.
“As a man who put his on the line and really went through the ultimate sacrifice for this country in his involvement in the military,” related Bernthal. “He’s a guy who brought the war home with him [in] the worst possible way. There are a lot of iterations of this character and in all of them it’s a man who’s gone through this unbelievable trauma and what’s interesting about our take on him is how this trauma reshapes his own philosophy.”
Additionally, Bernthal offered his own insight on what makes the Punisher relentlessly seek revenge on all criminals even after avenging his murdered family.
“With Frank, what was important was the emptiness inside him,” said Bernthal. “He’s dealing with this unbelievable loss. There’s unbelievable anger and hatred and shame. There’s a sense of responsibility and as a father and husband, if I were to lose my family on my watch … I had to put myself in as dark of place as possible the last six months.”
