Coldplay have revealed that they once submitted a song to David Bowie in the hope of collaborating with the late singer, only for him to turn them down with blunt honesty regarding the track’s quality.
Speaking in an interview with NME, Coldplay drummer Will Champion told the outlet that they had reached out to Bowie with a song that they felt would suit the singer. However, after frontman Chris Martin sent the letter, he received a reply from Bowie, reading: “It’s not a very good song, is it?”
Speaking of Bowie’s rejection of the track, Champion said: “He was very discerning. He wouldn’t just put his name to anything. I’ll give him credit for that.”
In ithe interview, Champion and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland speak of Bowie’s influence on their music, with Champion saying of his death: “When you have any involvement in music he was one of the points of reference for absolutely everything, for genres and for how to be a rockstar or a popstar or whatever it was. Completely defining that. So for musicians it’s quite disorienting.”
