Netflix Renews House of Cards For Fifth Season

House of Cards fans, I think we know who’s going to win the election: President Frank Underwood!

According to Deadline, Netflix has renewed House of Cards for a fifth season a month before the debut of the fourth season. While Kevin Spacey is expected back to reprise his role as Frank Underwood, series creator Beau Willimon is reportedly stepping down.

The Deadline report notes rumors that Willimon was forced out over production issues, but Willimon didn’t show any indication of that in his statement to the press.

“I’m grateful to Netflix and MRC, my fellow executive producers, our two incandescent stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, our talented writers, as well as the incredible cast and crew with whom I’ve had the privilege to work,” said Willimon. “After five years and four seasons, it’s time for me to move on to new endeavors, but I’m supremely proud of what we’ve built together, wish the show much continued success, and leave it in the hands of a very capable team.”

House of Cards is based on the British miniseries of the same name, which was in turn based upon the House of Cards novel by Michael Dobbs. The series was announced in 2011, and House of Cards quickly became Netflix’s signature drama series when it debuted in 2013. It is also the longest running series on Netflix, and it helped pave the way for Netflix to become a real player in the original programming market.

Netflix will release all 13 episodes of House of Cards season 4 on February 27.
