Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller Named Showrunner of New Star Trek Series

19 years ago, Bryan Fuller broke into television as a writer for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In 2017, Fuller will make his triumphant return to the Star Trek franchise with a brand new series of his own creation.

According to Deadline, Fuller has closed his deal to co-create and serve as the showrunner for the sixth live-action Star Trek TV series. Fuller is currently the showrunner for American Gods on STARZ, so it isn’t clear when he would begin work on the next Star Trek, but the series is slated to debut early next year on CBS All Access.

“It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before,” said Fuller in a statement.

Fuller went on to write for several seasons of Star Trek: Voyager before branching out into his own series with Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and Pushing Daisies. Fuller even wrote some of the best episodes of Heroes before launching his TV masterpiece: the modernized version of Hannibal on NBC.

While hardcore Star Trek fans have been vocal about their dislike of the reboot films new direction, Fuller’s involvement with the new series should be met with cheers. Fuller has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to write interesting and compelling characters while taking stories in unexpected directions.

CBS TV Studios President David Stapf added his own statement: “When we began discussions about the series returning to television, we immediately knew that Bryan Fuller would be the ideal person to work alongside Alex Kurtzman to create a fresh and authentic take on this classic and timeless series. Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of ‘Star Trek.’ Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us.”
