Nicholas Meyer is widely regarded as the man who saved Star Trek. He directed Star Trek II and Star Trek VI, in addition to co-writing Star Trek IV. Now, for the very first time, Meyer is joining a Star Trek series.
CBS All Access has announced that Meyer has signed on to Bryan Fuller’s upcoming new Star Trek series as a consulting producer and a staff writer. That means that Meyer will be producing new Star Trek stories for the first time since 1991!
“Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ’round the Mutara Nebula and ’round Genesis’ flames, he saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation,” said Fuller in a brief statement. “We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek’s greatest storytellers will be boldly returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff.”

Between Meyer and Fuller, the new Star Trek series appears to be leaning towards talented storytellers, and that is the right call. Fuller wrote for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager before making his mark with Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Heroes, and NBC’s reboot of Hannibal. Fuller is also executive producing American Gods for STARZ.
So far, no casting announcements for the new Star Trek series have been made, but Tony Todd has publicly mentioned that he is “on the short list” for the new show. Todd previously portrayed Worf’s brother Kurn on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, as well as an aged version of Jake Sisko on DS9.
