Update: Apparently this will no longer be the case, with GAME having released an updated press release that removes all mention of the retailer’s exclusivity deal. Thanks to VideoGamer for the update.
Original Story: If you’re not planning on purchasing your PlayStation VR from an online retailer when the virtual reality headset launches, then you’re going to be forced to pick it up at GAME, thanks to the high street retailer’s newly announced partnership with Sony.
The device is set to launch in October, with it retailing for £349.99 in the UK. However, if you don’t particularly want to shop with the likes of Amazon, then GAME will be your only option to pick up the headset from a brick and mortar store, with the company announcing that they have partnered with its manufacturer, Sony, in an exclusivity deal for the new tech.
A statement released by Charlotte Knight, GAME’s UK Retail MD, reads: “We are incredibly excited to partner with Sony to bring this innovative technology to the UK market and deliver the ground breaking PlayStation VR to our customer. It’s yet another way in which we are making GAME the best place to discover innovations in gaming whilst delivering an amazing experience for our community of gamers.
“Whether for yourself or as a Christmas present, we’re sure the PlayStation VR will be in high demand – so get it while you can!”
With the PlayStation VR likely set to be the second biggest gaming hardware launch of the year, behind Nintendo’s predicted Q4 2016 launch of its NX console, then the likelihood is that stock for the device will be very limited. This means that GAME being the only place consumers can pick up the headset could stand to become quite frustrating for those who can’t lay down the cash for their pre-order right now.
For those who can, you can pre-order the PlayStation VR either in-store of via GAME’s official website right here. The retailer is also selling a PSVR bundle for £389.98 that included the PlayStation Camera, which is essential if you want to use the headset.
