Gary Neville has been sacked by Valencia, the La Liga club has announced today.

The former Manchester United defender has been removed from his position at the club after just under four months, with a number of grueling losses being cited as the reasoning behind his departure.

While Neville had accepted that he would not be offered a new contract at the end of the season as a result of his squad’s performances, it was predicted that he would remain at the Spanish club until a new manager had been appointed before the start of this season. However, the club revealed today in a statement that they had decided to conclude his contract sooner rather than later.

Valencia have won just three of 16 league matches under the guidance of Neville, hovering six points above the relegation zone in 14th place. They also fell out of the Champions League, Europa League and Copa del Rey while the Englishman was in charge. An intense fan backlash against the former England international has also likely played into Valencia’s decision to swiftly oust him from his post, with supporters of the club having chanted for his sacking during matches.

Neville’s most torturous defeat came in the form of their 7-0 loss against Barcelona in February. Neville gave up his job as a pundit in order to manage the club, though it’s uncertain whether or not he will return to this role following his sacking.
