BBC Reveals Cast For ‘Doctor Who’ Spinoff, ‘Class’

There will be no new episodes of Doctor Who this year except for the annual Christmas special. But BBC and BBC America will be jumping back into the Whoniverse with Class later in 2016.

Class was announced last year as the newest spinoff from Doctor Who, which was created by YA author Patrick Ness. The series is set at Coal Hill School, which appeared in the earliest episodes of Doctor Who as well as recent seasons in which former companion Clara Oswald taught at the school when she wasn’t off having adventures in time and space.

Those adventures are apparently the catalyst for Class, as “the walls of space and time to become thin — and now there’s something pressing in from the other side.” And with the Doctor unavailable to help, the responsibility to prevent the end of everything will fall on four Coal Hill students, as played by Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah, all of whom are pictured above.

BBC also announced that Katherine Kelly will be a main cast member of Class as a “a powerful new presence at Coal Hill School.” So…we’re thinking she’s more than just a teacher.

In a statement, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat said “There’s nothing more exciting than meeting stars that nobody’s heard of yet,” said Steven Moffat. “We had the read-through of the first few episodes last week, and there was a whole row of them. Coal Hill School has been part of Doctor Who since the very first shoot in 1963, but this new show is anything but history. Class is dark and sexy and right now. I’ve always wondered if there could be a British Buffy — it’s taken the brilliant Patrick Ness to figure out how to make it happen.”

According to BBC, filming for Class officially began today, and the series is expected to premiere in either the fall or Summer.
