Legacy, the charity that cares for the families of veterans, has gathered prominent Australian actors together to read out letters from some of those who served in the WWI.
Letters of Gallipoli features the actors, shot in black and white and in an empty studio, bar a stool, reading out the letters in what is a very solemn and humble piece of media.
So far, the first two videos feature Vince Colosimo and Damon Herriman. In time, Diana Glenn, John Howard (the actor), Gyton Grantley, Ita Buttrose and Josh Lawson will also feature.
Colosimo’s reading, of a letter by Sergeant Keith Rourke sent to his mother, runs through the cramped and otherwise far from ideal conditions on the troop ships, while Herriman’s reading, of Major George Frederick Sutton Coombs, details the wide-eyed adrenaline horror of landing on the beach and being greeted by a “hailstorm” of bullets.
