Game of Thrones and Veep are the reigning Emmy Award-winning best drama and best comedy, respectively. Both shows are also extremely popular. Did anyone think that HBO wouldn’t renew them?
Deadline is reporting that HBO has officially ordered a seventh season of Game of Thrones, a move that had been expected for several months. One thing that is currently unclear is how long the seventh season of Game of Thrones will be. Showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff recently indicated that they are considering shortened seasons for the final two years of Game of Thrones. The number floated was 13 episodes after the sixth season, which would be split between seasons 7 and 8.
As for Veep, the renewal is seen as a vote of confidence for the series after the departure of creator Armando Iannucci last season. The renewal for Veep will take it through its sixth season.

Mike Judge’s Silicon Valley comedy series has also been renewed for what will be its fourth season. That means that HBO’s current lineup of Sunday night dramas and comedies will return in 2017. But with Game of Thrones nearing its endgame, the network will undoubtedly begin positioning other series as potential replacements for its flagship drama. The highly anticipated Westworld reboot could possibly fill that void, but it’s currently unclear whether Westworld will premiere in 2016 or 2017.
Game of Thrones, Veep, and Silicon Valley will return for new seasons on HBO this Sunday, April 24.
