AMC’s The Walking Dead has been a blockbuster comic book adaptation that keeps pushing the boundaries of basic cable television. Starting next month, Preacher is going to push even harder.
Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Preacher mature readers Vertigo comic book series was essentially The Walking Dead before there was The Walking Dead. Preacher was very beloved and controversial…and even downright vile at times. But it’s coming to television largely intact on AMC. Now, the only question is how far will AMC be willing to go to remain true to the comic.
Ahead of the series premiere of Preacher, AMC has released a few new photos of the main cast members:
Jesse Custer
Dominic Cooper is playing Jesse, the lead character of the show. As the title suggests, Jesse is a small town preacher before he is unwillingly merged with a creature known as Genesis, which gives him the word of God…as in the ability to command almost anyone in creation.
Tulip O’Hare
Ruth Negga is playing Jesse’s ex-girlfriend, Tulip, an assassin and extremely dangerous woman in her own right.
Cassidy
AMC would prefer that you think of Joseph Gilgun’s Cassidy as an “Irish vagabond.” And sure, he is…but he’s also a vampire who loves to get drunk, and a friend to Jesse and Tulip.
Eugene “Arseface” Root and Sheriff Root
W. Earl Brown is one of Preacher’s first adversaries as Sheriff Root, but his son, Eugene (Ian Colletti) is a pretty nice guy…who is disfigured from a misguided suicide attempt. Hence his nickname, “Arseface.”
Preacher is set to debut on Sunday, May 22 at 10pm on AMC immediately following the mid-season finale of Fear The Walking Dead.
