IDW Is Bringing M.A.S.K. Back To Comics

Anybody remember M.A.S.K.? It was an 80s toyline from Kenner that was basically G.I. Joe meets Transformers with masked pilots who drove vehicles that could transform into other, cooler vehicles. In case you were wondering, M.A.S.K. stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand and their enemies were called V.E.N.O.M., which stands for Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem.

M.A.S.K. was also a pretty piss poor animated series that has largely been forgotten, except for its opening credits sequence.

Hasbro has been making noise about bringing M.A.S.K. into the so-called Hasbro Cinematic Universe with G.I. Joe, so it should not surprise anyone that IDW Publishing is now bringing M.A.S.K. back to comics with a new comic book series by writer Brandon Easton and artist Tony Vargas.

USA Today broke the story about the new M.A.S.K. series, which added that it would take a page from Fast and Furious

“This is a M.A.S.K. for the 21st century with a diverse team of specialists who are chosen for a top-secret program with a painful learning curve,” Easton told USA Today. “Ultimately, each participant will have to choose a side — and no matter which side they choose, the consequences will be great…Imagine if your car, motorcycle, SUV or yacht could change into a more powerful vehicle complete with state-of-the-art weapons systems and other cutting-edge technology,” the writer says. “The possibilities are as fun as they are disastrous.”

Easton also promised that “you’re not going to see a teenage kid riding a cowardly robot across the battlefield.” Thank. God.

M.A.S.K. will be released later this year.
