The Flaming Lips Will Guest Star In ‘X-Men ’92’

In his first legendary X-Men run, writer Chris Claremont occasionally put his favorite musicians alongside Marvel’s mutant heroes. Most of the time these cameos were just throwaway gags, but later this summer, X-Men ’92 is revisiting this tradition by giving its special musical guests a spotlight on the cover!

Billboard has announced that The Flaming Lips will appear in X-Men ’92 # 6, which is a throwback series that features the team in a continuity-free Marvel universe that greatly resembles the classic X-Men animated series. Both The Flaming Lips and The Toadies were approached by Marvel to lend their likenesses to the book, and both bands said yes.

“It really all started with us joking about the kind of stunts they’d pull in comics in the ’90s,” recalled X-Men ’92 co-writer Chris Sims. “Chad [Bowers] and I [said] ‘hey, wouldn’t it be great if we could get a real-life band to appear in the issue, like they did with celebrity guest appearances back then.’ We just didn’t think we’d actually get to do it!”

“Being in an X-Men comic where they (the X-Men themselves) actually run security at one of our shows… I should have written a song about that,” added The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne. “I mean… before it really happened.” The Toadies’ Mark Reznicek added “as a lifelong fan of comics in general, and X-Men in particular, I couldn’t be more excited that the Toadies are appearing as characters in X-Men ’92!!”

The cover for X-Men ’92 # 6 was drawn by David Nakayama. The story was written by Sims and Bowers, with Alti Firmansyah as the artist. The issue will be released in August.
