Before Afro Punk was a brand, back when hip-hop and punk were outsider music, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore (a.k.a. Dr. Madd Vibe) roamed and pop-locked down the grimy streets of Hollywood, busing in from his home in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley and mingling with the local freaks – his tribe. The man whose band fused punk, hip-hop and ska into a music and performance template that would influence countless others gives a brief oral history of his pre-Fishbone days on Deflowered. The interview series is hosted on pro-cannabis media platform Merry Jane (co-founded by Snoop Dogg, and whose partners include Seth Rogen and Miley Cyrus.)
Grinning with the beatific calm of one who partakes often, he maps out his early days as performer (“I started out as a street dancer in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley”) battling to the music blasting from boom boxes; how he fused hip-hop and punk elements to create his unique style of performance, what he eats when the munchies hit, and, of course, his take on cannabis. “I think the misconception about cannabis is that it’s a drug,” he says in a moment of seriousness.
Watch as he talks about the first place he really enjoyed smoking out, what he likes to watch while smoking, and how it feeds his creativity.
