Just days after the series premiere of Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta’s Outcast, Cinemax may be looking ahead to its next comic book adaptation for television.
Deadline is reporting that comic book scribe Brian Michael Bendis was at the ATX Television Festival where he said “I do a [comic] book called Scarlet. which is soon to be announced also in our universe of television. Not announced yet, but HBO.” He added that the adaptation was “at the earliest stage”, but that “the team around it… will be announced as soon as all are on the same page.”
Now, that did cause some confusion when HBO sources claimed to be unaware of the series. However, Deadline later clarified that the project is in development at Cinemax, the sister network to HBO. Scarlet has been released erratically since 2010, and it is published through Marvel Comics’ Icon imprint. Bendis and artist Alex Maleev created the series, which follows a woman named Scarlet Rue who breaks the fourth wall while starting a second American revolution.

“Scarlet is a list of things you can’t get made. Here’s a female lead who’s killing cops,” noted Bendis at ATX. “When it was sold, it was sold to people who were actively looking for that.”
Yeah, that sounds like Cinemax. Bendis was also the co-creator of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and the Powers series on Playstation Network. With signature dramas Banshee and Strike Back no longer on the network, Cinemax may be looking to reload in the action genre. Whether Scarlet actually goes to series remains to be seen.
