Now on to the traps!

Jaw Trap or Reverse Bear Trap – Saw I

“Hello, Amanda. You don’t know me, but I know you. I want to play a game. Here’s what happens if you lose. The device you’re wearing is hooked into your upper and lower jaws. When the timer at the back goes off, your mouth will be permanently ripped open. Think of it like a reverse bear trap. Here, I’ll show you.” [trap goes off on a mannequin head] “There is only one key to open the device. It’s in the stomach of your dead cellmate. Look around, Amanda. Know that I’m not lying. You better hurry up. Live or die. Make your choice.”

The victim of this trap, Amanda, had one minute to get a reverse bear trap off of her head before the timer goes off. Once the time is up, the trap- which is hooked to her jaws – would snap open, ripping her head apart in the process. The key to her trap is in the stomach of her unconscious husband, who’s with her in the room. She thinks he’s dead, but as she goes to cut into his stomach for the key, he regains consciousness.

The Furnace – Saw II

“Hello Obi. I want to play a game. For years, you’ve burned those around you with your lies, cons, and deceits. Now you’ll have to redeem yourself, for the games you’ve played with others, by playing one of mine. Inside the device in front of you are two antidotes for the poison coursing through your veins. One is my gift to you for helping me kidnap the others. The second is yours to donate. However, one of them will not win the prize. Remember, when you’re in hell, only the Devil can help you out.”

Burning to death is an unthinkable nightmare for just about everyone. For this trap, Obi was forced to crawl inside a furnace to retrieve two antidotes to the nerve toxins that were placed inside. The antidotes were attached to a chain which, once pulled, would supposedly free him. Instead, the chain closed and activated the funace, at which point the only way for the victim to escape would be to twist a gas value found above the furnace’s flames. Burning alive is horrible enough (even for a pyromaniac), but faced with such a torturous death with escape an arm’s reach away is mind-shattering in itself.

The Shotgun Collar – Saw 3

“The device that you’re wearing is linked to my heart rate monitor. The second that heart rate monitor flatlines or you move out of range, an explosion will go off in that collar. Your life and my life will end simultaneously.”

Little does Jigsaw’s vengeful captive realize, his wife’s little neck brace is hooked up to Jigsaw’s heart rate. When his revenge on Jigsaw is put in motion, his wife’s head was blasted off. It’s a shocking second punch to Jigsaw’s death, which was completely unexpected and raised a lot of questions as to how the series would carry on.

Venus Flytrap – Saw II

Michael wakes up to find the venus fly trap device around his neck. He looks in the mirror and sees his eye is badly cut, before the TV set in the room turns on and shows Jigsaw digging into Micheals face while he is sleeping. The tape shows that Jigsaw has put the key to the lock on the device inside his face, underneath his right eye. The only way to get the key is to cut through his eye and remove it. Michael walks over to a toolbox in the room and pulls out a scalpel, which pulls the string off the fly trap and sets the timer in motion. He has sixty seconds until it closes on his face…

The Rack – Saw 3

The most elaborately painful and torturous trap of the entire Saw series doesn’t have a quick-finish trigger that kills its unlucky victim. This one does its job much slower than most traps, torturing every part of the captor until they die. The victim’s hands and feet are nailed into place on the device, at which point the rack grinds to life and twists every limb of the victim completely around until bones protrude in the most gruesome of ways. For the kill, the head is twisted completely around, but only after enduring unimaginable, bone-splitting agony.

“Hello Jeff. If you are listening to this, that means that the confrontation you so long dreamed of is finally unfolding. In your head he is a cipher, a symbol of your life changing, a symbol of death. I present him to you now as a simple human being. His name is Timothy Young. He’s 27 years old, a medical student with a mother and a father just like you, a man whose life also changed the day your son died. That day he made a terrible mistake. You believed he didn’t pay for that mistake, and now is your chance to make him pay. The device Timothy is strapped to is my personal favorite. I call it the rack. The human body is a miraculous creation. Ever wonder how far the arm can twist? This device is going to start twisting. There is a chance he might live, though, with your help. To your right is a box. At the back of it is a key. It’s tied to the trigger of a shotgun. The question you have to ask yourself is this. Are you willing to take a bullet for the man who killed your son? Does ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ apply here, Jeff? Make your choice.”
