Barcelona Fashion Week wrapped up on the 15th and it was a busy few days in Spain filled with runway shows, world-class designers and a bevy of star-sightings. With loads of local home-grown talent, these are the top 10 Barcelona Fashion Week designers.
Krizia Robustella
Self-defined as “Sport Deluxe, Krizia Robustella takes the sport garments of the past and creates her own universe where comfort merges with luxury and luxury moves into shapes and fabrics that were previously reserved for formal occasions.
Josep Abril Janer
This menswear designer markets his collection at trade fairs and presented it with a runway show in Barcelona. Since 2003 he has been the creative director of the “Armand Basi One” collection for men, which has been shown in Paris since 2007, and since that time he launched the “Uniformed by” luxury uniform line, created costumes for shows and gave a number of classes and workshops at design schools.
Joan Alfonso Zamora i Royo and Peña Carrera
Jan Zamora and Alfonso Peña are the talent behind Barcelona-based men’s clothing brand Jan iú Més. They have taken part in the Passarel·la Gaudí (Barcelona), the Pasarela Abierta (Murcia), the Festival Noovo (Santiago de Compostela), 080 Barcelona Fashion (Barcelona) and Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week.
Steffie Christiaens
After gaining invaluable experience and savoir-faire in the ateliers of Balenciaga and the Maison Martin Margiela between 2007 and 2010, Steffie Christiaens established her Paris studio to pursue a conceptual design process through women’s and men’s ready-to-wear collections.
Toni Francesc Ortega
Toni Francesc looks for inspiration in everyday things, in the streets and in people, and then interprets what he sees in his studio. This has been the source of some of his most personal collections, such as “Sentimientos” and “Water’s Mood.” He showed his first collection at Mexico Fashion Week and at Bread & Butter 2007, which featured a fresh, dynamic style with very functional garments designed for the modern, urban, sophisticated woman.
Joseph Ehud
Ehud was born in Israel and grew up in New Zealand. After studying Fine Arts, he started his menswear label in 1999 and showed his first collection on the runway in 2001 at the first New Zealand Fashion Week. Through experimenting with the limitations of menswear, he gives a fresh vision to masculine codes.
Juan Pedro López García
Juan Pedro López was born in Barcelona, where he studied design. In 1999 he won first prize in the Smirnoff Fashion Award in Spain and was a finalist in the international version of the same competition in Hong Kong. He was invited to the Pasarela Abierta in Murcia and to the first edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion, and since 2007 he has combined his work as a designer with that of a stylist, working in Moscow for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. He opened his own shop in Barcelona in October 2010.
Celia Vela
Her debut show took place on the official catwalks of Barcelona in 1998 and she is now a participant in 080 Barcelona Fashion. She has her own shop in Figueres and has worked with Coty-Astor, ModaFAD, Barcelona Moda Centre, Dupont, el Círculo Textil and Lucky Strike, among others.
Karlota Laspalas
Karlota Laspalas (Pamplona, 1981) is a young designer based in Barcelona. Her work is a constant observation of the human identity, of our fears, longings and hopes, based on observation and experimentation in our own lives. Her collections have been chosen to form part of numerous runways shows in Europe, such as in Bilbao, Murcia, Madrid, Udine, Amsterdam and Barcelona, and she has won several prizes in recognition of her work.
Manuel Bolaño Gómez
He was born in Barcelona but grew up in Galicia. In 2002 he moved to Barcelona, where he studied fashion at the Felicidad Duce Higher School of Design and Fashion. In 2007 he won the prize for the best collection at Bread & Butter Barcelona. He took part in the Pasarela Abierta in Murcia, won prizes at the Young Creators Competition in Madrid and at the Festival Noovo in Santiago de Compostela, and was selected to take part in the Government of Catalonia’s Projecte Bressol.
