In “Eureka,” scientific destruction is almost always around the corner. And now the small town of big geniuses may finally meet its end.
Deadline had the first report that Syfy was bringing “Eureka” to a close. However, Syfy has released an official statement (via The Hollywood Reporter) that characterizes the six episode order as a sixth season pick up; which would make it the shortest season of “Eureka” to date.
While the initial reports indicated that the series would be brought to a conclusion, Syfy’s statement offers some hope for fans of “Eureka.”
“Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise,” related Syfy’s President of Original Content, Mark Stern.
Last summer, “Eureka” was renewed for a fifth season of 13 episodes which have yet to air. Production for the fifth season is said to be going until the end of this month, with the cast set to return to the set in October to film the six additional episodes that were ordered.
“Eureka” was created by Andrew Cosby and Jaime Paglia and it debuted on Syfy back in 2006. The series stars Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter, an ordinary sheriff who stumbled upon the hidden town of Eureka, Orgean; which is home to some of the greatest scientific minds the world has ever seen.
Over the course of three and a half seasons, Carter has settled down in Eureka alongside Dr. Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), Dr. Henry Deacon (Joe Morton), Jo Lupo (Erica Cerra), Dr. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) and Zane Donovan (Niall Matter), among many others.
The second half of the fourth season is currently airing Monday nights on Syfy, where it continues to perform solidly in the ratings. Given Syfy’s track record when it comes to televising new seasons of “Eureka,” the fifth season will likely be held back until next summer. The abbreviated sixth season could even be held for a full year after that; which would mean that it won’t air until 2013.
The Deadline report also notes that “Warehouse 13” is near a fourth season pickup, reaffirming its status as the network’s flagship show.
