BBC Greenlights ‘Sherlock’ Season 3

Fans in America will have to wait until May to see the second season BBC’s “Sherlock,” which recently aired its third and final episode of the year. However, there’s some good news that may make that wait a lot more tolerable.

BBC has officially ordered a third season (or series) of “Sherlock;” which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson.as they solve cases inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories in modern day London.

“Yes of course there’s going to be a third series,” tweeted “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who” showrunner, Steven Moffat. “It was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!”

According to Deadline, the third season is in the early planning stages for 2013. There were some troubling rumors that the burgeoning film careers of both Cumberbatch and Freeman would preclude a third season. Cumberbatch recently landed the lead villain role in the “Star Trek” sequel after recent appearances in “War Horse” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Freeman is set to play Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit;” which will also feature Cumberbatch as the Necromancer and the voice of the dragon, Smaug.

A U.K. representative for Cumberbatch told Deadline that “I’m sure he would love to do a 3rd [season]. It’s very unlikely they would have Sherlock without Sherlock;” which echoes previous quotes from Freeman about his eagerness to return as well.

Back in Septemer, CBS ordered a pilot script for its own modern day Sherlock Holmes series. And now Deadline is also reporting that the project has been ordered to pilot.

The CBS Sherlock Holmes series will be called “Elementary,” and it finds the great detective living in New York City while solving cases as a private eye. Screenwriter Rob Doherty is writing the script, with both Sarah Timberman (“Unforgettable”) and Carl Beverly (“A Gifted Man”) attached as executive producers.
