Drop what you’re doing, because this is important. If you love film, The film industry is moving away from striking and preserving 35mm prints, putting the very concept of film preservation at risk. The issue is far-reaching, and yes, it affects you. Ticket prices continue to rise even though theaters and distributors no longer pay to strike prints and ship them. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. They might as well be burning books, since they’re talking about ridding themselves of 35mm prints altogether. Luckily, we have Julia Marchese of New Beverly Cinema on hand to bring light to the issue. She’s behind the Fight for 35mm petition, and she’s building kickstarter campaign for her first documentary, Out of Print, to explore the joy – and plight – of revival movie houses.
We also implore you to support the Association of Moving Images Archivists (AMIA) Student Chapter by attending “Something Old, Something New” at the New Beverly in Los Angeles on May 4, where they will be screening John Frankenheimer’s Seconds and John Woo’s Face/Off in one of the most delicious double features we’ve ever heard of.
