Ever since David Tennant left “Doctor Who,” speculation has run rampant that his Tenth Doctor would return for the 50th Anniversary special later this year.
Today, BBC confirmed that the rumors are true.
Tennant will reprise his Doctor alongside Billie Piper, who will once again portray Rose Tyler; the first companion of the current “Doctor Who” series. While story details are currently scarce, the Tenth Doctor and Rose will team up with the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and Jenna-Louise Coleman’s Clara Oswin Oswald in the one hour special.
For over four seasons, Tennant played the Doctor before his departure in “The End of Time.” Piper had a cameo appearance in “The End of Time,” but her final chronological appearance came at the conclusion of the fourth season, when Rose was reunited with the Doctor and she was given the chance to build a romantic relationship with a duplicate version of the Doctor in an alternate universe.
Given the fact that Rose and her Doctor were cut off from our universe, the anniversary special may briefly allow them to once again interact with the Doctor of this universe or the adventure may take place at an earlier point in time when the Tenth Doctor was still traveling with Rose.
The story of Tennant and Piper’s return first broke from leaked copies of next month’s issue of Doctor Who Magazine; which also confirmed that veteran actor John Hurt will have a role in the anniversary special.
The “Doctor Who” 50th Anniversary special will be filmed in 3D and it will debut in November. New episodes of “Doctor Who” return tonight on BBC America.
