Mark Teixeira Needs Surgery, Done For Season

News just keeps getting worse for the New York Yankees. Mark Teixeira will require surgery to fix his wrist and will miss the rest of the season.

You also have to feel for Teixeira, who never found his groove this season. He only played 15 games and hit just .151 with three homers and 12 RBI. He originally suffered the injury in spring training. After resting it until May 31, Teixeira re-aggravated the injury just recently. Recovery will now take another six months.

Teixeira told reporters at a press conference:

“It’s very tough, especially in a season where the team could probably use me … I really would have loved to be a part of this.”

The Yankees released the following statement:

“After a recent MRI with dye contrast was performed on Mark Teixeira’s right wrist, New York Yankees Team Physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad, along with Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and two other New York-based hand specialists (Dr. Michelle Carlson from the Hospital for Special Surgery and Dr. Keith Raskin from NYU) confirmed that the sheath has not adequately healed. Surgery has been recommended to repair the tear on the tendon sheath of his wrist.”

This of course adds to the list of injuries the Yanks have already dealt with this season: Curtis Granderson, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Kevin Youkilis.

So if you’re a Teixeira owner, how do you recover? Well, it will be hard to, but here are a few options that might cushion the blow:

James Loney – Rays (46% owned): I’ve never been a Loney guy. But he’s batting .309/.365/.477 through 78 games and has a seven game hitting streak. Ride the hot streak while you can.

Eric Hosmer – Royals (61% owned): Probably one of my top choices if he’s available in your league. Hosmer is still young enough to turn it around, and he’s really started to do just that since George Brett was named hitting coach. He has two home runs in his last four games; he’s also hit a triple and multiple doubles — all good signs. He is the No. 2 first baseman in fantasy over the past week.

Adam LaRoche – Nationals (64% owned): He now has 11 HRs on the season; he hit 33 last year. He could get hot.

Brandon Moss – Athletics (35% owned): He has lots of power; 14 HRs already. But you’ll have to bench him against lefties. No. 4 on the player rater among all 1B over the past two weeks.

Chris Carter – Astros (22% owned): Carter already has 15 HRs but will only bat around .230.

Kendrys Morales – Mariners (51% owned): He’s been a little banged up this month, but he’s still hitting .271 on the year with 9 homers.

Mitch Moreland – Rangers (42% owned): He has BIG potential. He had to sit on the DL for two weeks, but before his injury he was on pace for over 30 HRs.

Also be on the lookout for Mike Carp and Kyle Blanks. If they stay hot they could be bumped up in their respective lineups.
