Ahead of next week’s Comic-Con International, Fox has made a major commitment that may see one of Alan Moore’s most famous creations get another shot in Hollywood.
TVLine is reporting that Fox has given a Put pilot order to “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” which the network describes as “A drama series based on Alan Moore’s critically and commercially successful graphic novel series about a group of Victorian-age literary characters, including Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, who team up to fight a common enemy.”
The Put pilot order means that Fox must air the pilot episode or pay a substantial fee. That means that “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” has a very strong chance of being picked up to series. Twentieth Century Fox Television is producing the potential series, with Michael Green (“Heroes”) attached as an executive producer alongside Erwin Stoff (The Matrix).
“League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” was created by Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill in 1999. Originally conceived as a Justice League for the Victorian era, it followed the adventures of Allan Quatermain, Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man and Mr. Hyde.
Sean Connery starred as Allan Quartermain in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie adaptation in 2003; which infamously added Tom Sawyer and Dorian Gray to the mix of characters while entirely missing the point of Moore and O’Neill’s creation.
The new “ League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” TV pilot is presumably in contention for a 2014 pickup on Fox.
