Nominations for the 2013 Emmy Awards were announced Thursday morning — and while “American Horror Story: Asylum” was the most nominated program of the year with 17 nods (mostly due to FX inexplicably convincing the Emmy folks that a show in its second season and renewed for a third is a miniseries), the field became a coming out party for both “Game of Thrones” and Netflix.
Clearly, the “Red Wedding” furor helped buoy “Thrones” to a breakout showing this year, scoring 16 total nominations for HBO, who led the overall nomination haul with 108 total, its best Emmy showing in nine years.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s foray into original programming paid off with 14 nominations for their three productions — political drama “House of Cards,” comedy “Arrested Development” and thriller “Hemlock Grove.”
