Comic-Con 2013: ‘The Walking Dead’ Panel Report

Earlier today, AMC brought the cast and creators of “The Walking Dead” back to San Diego Comic-Con International for the fourth year in a row.

“Talking Dead” host Chris Hardwick served as the moderator once again alongside series stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, David Morrissey, Scott Wilson, and Chad Coleman. “The Walking Dead” co-creator Robert Kirkman was also on hand with new showrunner, Scott Gimple as well as executive producers Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert and Greg Nicotero.

A trailer for the fourth season was premiered before the panel officially got under way. Kirkman set the tone for the upcoming storylines by saying that the world is getting worse at an escalated pace while Gimple promised that events would “get insane very quickly.”

More specifically, Kirkman cited the Governor’s whereabouts as one of the big mysteries of the season and he added that all bets are off with him. Morrissey made an attempt to illustrate how the Governor justified shooting his followers before concluding that a switch flipped in the Governor’s head during the finale.

Lincoln noted that the new season will reveal why the group decided to stay in the prison instead of moving into Woodbury. He also said that Rick has largely stepped back from a leadership role to focus on his children. Gurira spoke about Michonne becoming more of a member of the prison community and it wasn’t long before someone asked Kirkman if Rick and Michonne will become a couple.

Kirkman conceded that a Rick and Michonne romance was possible, leading to recurring calls for “Richonne” from subsequent fans in the question line. Yeun and Cohen spoke about Glenn and Maggie’s relationship after their mistreatment at the Governor’s hands before adding that the relationship will be strengthened in the new season.

As the new character on the show, Coleman said that Tyreese is still figuring out how to be a good guy during the zombie apocalypse. Coleman hinted that Tyreese would be challenged by that and “eventually, a can of whoop-ass might get popped open.”

Reedus consistently received the loudest cheers from the crowd any time that he or his character, Darryl were mentioned. Reedus didn’t shed much light on the new season, but he did say that Darryl would have been doomed to be “Mini-Merle” if he had stayed by Merle’s side. Without his brother, Darryl became his own man and he found a surrogate family.

Hardwick also announced that “The Walking Dead” Season 4 will premiere on Sunday October 13, with a new season of “Talking Dead” premiering immediately afterwards.
