So, Crave Online’s massive and fantastic coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2013 is winding down – there are still interviews left to transcribe, which most journalists will tell you is the most arduous part of their jobs. So we’ll still be getting you some more details, but for now, let’s run down five cool things we learned about what’s coming up in the world of comic books at SDCC.
While they didn’t say it outright, Marvel’s Ultimates panel heavily implied that after the two miniseries called Hunger and Cataclysm, the arrival of the 616 Galactus in the aftermath of Age of Ultron will spell the end of the Ultimate Universe. However, the spacetime-warping effects of that series sounds like it will work both ways, and selected characters from the Ultimate Universe may just survive that… well, cataclysm. There’s far too much hype around Miles Morales to lose him – and they’ve promised that the end of Spider-Men, where Peter Parker looks up the 616 version of Miles, will be followed up on. There’s also implication that the alternate universe ‘incursions’ going on in New Avengers will be connected to the Ultimate Universe as well. Big stuff is afoot!
Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness will be starting a new series called Amazing X-Men, which will go about the process of bringing the longstanding X-elf Nightcrawler back to life in the 616 (aka the standard Marvel Universe). He’s been dead since 2010, but that’s about to change. Rejoice, X-fans!
Fan favorite scribe Simone, who is making a habit of taking on iconic female heroes like Batgirl and, more recently, Red Sonja, is taking her talents to Tomb Raider, thanks to the new-school video game revamp of Lara Croft that focuses less on her titantic bosom and more on, you know, raiding tombs. She also says she’ll be bringing her personal love of archaeology to bear in this series that will bridge the last game into the next one. A perfect time to solidify this character as a force to be reckoned with.
The aforementioned Age of Ultron effect may be spelling doom to the Ultimate Universe, but it’s also giving new life to the world of 2099. Not only is Spider-Man 2099 coming in for a three issue story in Superior Spider-Man, but Rick Remender dropped a spoiler that Doom 2099 will play a big role in Uncanny Avengers as well. This is great news, because if anybody likes delving into ’90s comics and playing the good parts to the hilt, it’s Remender – and the best parts of Doom 2099 came at the hands of Warren Ellis. This sounds like it’s going to be fantastic.
Bermejo is an amazingly detailed artist who has made a big name for himself by illustrating a critically-acclaimed Brian Azzarello Joker story, and taking the full reigns for Batman: Noel with his gorgeous paintwork, and now he’s set to take a crack at writing and illustrating his own monthly series for Vertigo called Suiciders. It takes place in a Los Angeles that’s been destroyed by an earthquake and cut off from the rest of America, and then gets taken over by a deadly, violent game – reality television in a Mad Max style. Can Bermejo keep up his high standard of quality on a monthly basis? No idea, but it should be cool to see him try.
