‘Supernatural’ Spinoff Gets A Backdoor Pilot

During Comic-Con International, word broke that a potential “Supernatural” spinoff series was in the works. Ahead of tomorrow’s presentation for the CW at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, it appears that the project is one step closer to reality.

According to Deadline, the CW is going forward with plans to create a “Supernatural” spinoff by running a backdoor pilot during the ninth season. This is the same strategy that the CW used to successfully spinoff “The Originals” out of “The Vampire Diaries” last season and it’s a common way to build a franchise on television.

“Supernatural” Supervising Producer Andrew Dabb will write the episode that sets up the potential spinoff; which is said to still be very early in its development. At the moment, we only know that the spinoff will be set in Chicago and “explore the clashing hunter and monster cultures.”

In theory, “Supernatural” could come back in 2014 for a tenth season and match the decade-long run of “Smallville.” But it seems unlikely that the series would go on longer than that. There’s also the possibility that the ninth season of “Supernatural” will be the last one.

The CW will presumably share more information about the potential “Supernatural” spinoff later this week at the TCA Press Tour.
