I’ve been with the Television Critics Association all week gathering news on upcoming fall shows and interviews with the stars to run when they premiere. At tonight’s CBS party, I landed two one on one interviews with stars who happen to be in Marvel movies. “2 Broke Girls”’ Kat Dennings is in the Thor series, and gave hints about the size of her role in the sequel Thor: The Dark World.
The trailer shows Thor and Jane Foster leaving earth, in what we presume is early in the movie, with Darcy (Dennings) shrinking smaller and smaller as they rise. Dennings assured us that not only is Darcy a significant part of the movie, but even more so than in the original Thor.
“I can’t really say too much but the role is bigger than it was the last movie,” Dennings said. However, she wasn’t quite full time on Dark World, as it was filming during her “Broke Girls” season. “I work full time on the show and then I flew on my hiatus weeks to London to shoot the movie.”
Cobie Smulders was also at the CBS party promoting the final season of “How I Met Your Mother.” She will reprise her Avengers role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill on the pilot to ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Iron Man 3 had people asking where S.H.I.E.L.D. was during Tony Stark’s battle with The Mandarin. Smulders said Cap 2 will let everyone know what S.H.I.E.L.D. is up to.
“Oh yes, very much,” she said. “It’s an entirely different movie [from The Avengers] too. It’s very much reality based and they try to bring the character into the world of now. He was very much affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D. so watching that dynamic play out is what the movie is.”
As such, Hill’s interactions will be noticeably different than those scripted by Joss Whedon, though Smulders pointed us to a different Marvel heroine for Cap 2. “He’s working very closely with Romanoff, with Scarlett [Johansson], so that’s the pairing to focus on.”
While I had Smulders, I also got her reaction to the news about The Avengers: Age of Ultron, announced as the sequel title at Comic-Con. “I don’t know much about Ultron. I have some reading to do, but I’m excited. This is the mystery of Marvel. I don’t know how Maria Hill is affiliated with the Avengers sequel but we’ll see. I’m excited to read the script if it comes my way.”
With “Mother” wrapping this season, and we assume “S.H.I.E.L.D.” will be a hit, would Smulders consider signing on to that series’ second season? “I don’t even know. It was announced and then all these questions come out. They are an amazing cast. They have amazing story lines and if they want to write one that involves me, I’d be happy to do it, but we’ll see.”
We’ll be back with more Avengers news after we eat some shawarma.
