Back in April, word emerged that Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman was being seriously considered as a leading character for his own spinoff series. “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan subsequently confirmed that a Saul Goodman show was in the works. Now, it appears to be going forward.
Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures TV and AMC have struck a deal for “Better Call Saul!,” the tentatively titled “Breaking Bad” spinoff that will serve as a prequel to that show, exploring how Saul became a “criminal lawyer.”
Saul Goodman was introduced in the second season of “Breaking Bad” as the crooked lawyer hired by Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) to get their dealer, Badger (Matt L. Jones) out of some legal trouble without exposing their operation. Since then, Saul has emerged as one of the most popular characters on the series.
Gilligan and Peter Gould are creating the Saul Goodman spinoff as a one-hour series, despite rumors that “Better Call Saul!” would potentially be a half hour comedy. According to Deadline, talks with AMC are still ongoing before a formal series order for “Better Call Saul!” can be given. However, it was noted that Netflix and other cable channels were “very interested” in swooping up the series if talks with AMC were to collapse..
