At last night’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, HBO took home 20 awards; which may be an insurmountable lead heading into next weekend’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
HBO’s TV movie, Behind The Candelabra won in 8 out of the 9 fields it was nominated in, including art direction, casting, costumes and both makeup categories. Among the TV series awards, “Boardwalk Empire” won for art direction, hairstyling, sound mixing and sound editing while “Game of Thrones” took home awards for outstanding visual effects and makeup.
The Netflix original series “House of Cards” won two awards: outstanding cinematography and best casting for a drama series; which may be a good omen for its chances in the Primetime Emmy Awards. STARZ also picked up two awards for “Da Vinci’s Demons” in main title theme and main title design.
Aside from Behind The Candelabra’s near sweep, the biggest story of the night was Bob Newhart winning his first Emmy after six previous nominations. Newhart was given the award for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy for his stint on “The Big Bang Theory.” Melissa Leo won the corresponding award for her turn in FX’s “Louie.” On the drama side, “True Blood” actress Carrie Preston won Best Guest Actress in a Drama for her recurring role on CBS’s “The Good Wife” and Dan Bucatinsky received the Best Guest Actor in a Drama for his role on “Scandal.”
