The 65th Annual Emmy Awards had its share of repeat performances. But there were definitely some upsets along the way.
After four previous nominations, “Breaking Bad” has finally won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, edging out last year’s winner, “Homeland,” newcomer “House of Cards,” perennial contenders “Game of Thrones” and “Downton Abbey” as well as four time winner, “Mad Men.”
Shockingly, “Breaking Bad” was shut out of the lead and supporting actor categories after series stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul had dominated those awards for years. Instead, Jeff Daniels was named Outstanding Lead Actor for “The Newsroom,” with Bobby Cannavale winning Outstanding Supporting Actor for his single season as Gyp Rosetti on “Boardwalk Empire.”
“Breaking Bad’s” lone acting award went to Anna Gunn, who picked up her first Outstanding Supporting Actress award for Skylar White. Claire Danes was a repeat Outstanding Lead Actress winner for “Homeland.”
In comedy, “Modern Family” won its fourth Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy in a row, defeating “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Girls,” “Louie” and “Veep.” Jim Parsons of “The Big Bang Theory” and Julia Louise-Dreyfus of “Veep” took the leading categories in comedy, with the supporting awards going to Tony Hale from “Veep” and Merritt Wever from “Nurse Jackie.”
HBO’s Behind The Candelabra dominated the TV Movie/Miniseries category with the top award, Outstanding Director for Steven Soderbergh and Lead Actor for Michael Douglas. Laura Linney took the Outstanding Lead Actress award for Showtime’s “The Big C,” with James Cromwell (“American Horror Story: Asylum”) and Ellen Burstyn (“Political Animals”) taking supporting actor and actress, respectively.
