Earlier this week, Fox ordered a “Gotham” TV series centered on the early days of James Gordon from the Batman comic books. In addition to the possible adaptation of “The Flash” and its parent series “Arrow” on The CW, there may be four DC inspired television shows next season.
Deadline is reporting that NBC has picked up a “Constantine” TV project “with penalty;” which is not as impressive as Fox ordering “Gotham’ to series sight unseen. But it does seem as if NBC is serious about getting “Constantine” ready for next season.
Originally created as supporting character in Swamp Thing by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette and Jamie Delano, John Constantine went on to star in his own comic book series called Hellblazer; which ran for 300 issues. In 2003, Keanu Reeves portrayed Constantine in the feature film of the same name.
While Reeves played John Constantine as an American, the character was conceived as a British con man/occult investigator/working class magician who was often able to outwit supernatural adversaries and rarely cast spells.
NBC’s “Constantine” is being written by David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone. Goyer is the writer of the Blade trilogy, co-writer of The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel as well as the creator of “Da Vinci’s Demons” on STARZ. Cerone is a writer and executive producer on “The Mentalist.”
Warner Bros. TV is producing the potential “Constantine” series for NBC. If the project gets a pilot commitment from NBC, casting for a new John Constantine could begin within the next few months.
