Tech Squibs: Reebok Checklight Runs for Concussion Prevention

SQUIB: a : a short humorous or satiric writing or speech; b : a short news item. (Merriam-Webster)

This Tech Squib wants to give concussions a headache.

The Reebok Checklight Concussion Prevention system measures hits and features an easily spotted indicator light to track G-Forces. According to Reebok, if an impact reaches the threshold of a possible injury, the Checklight flashes yellow. If that hit crosses that dangerous threshold, it will flash red for any medical staff or training team to see.

As you can see in the photo above, the Checklight fits underneath a helmet with the light exposed. Retailing for $149 at Team Express, the Checklight is specially designed to prevent multiple concussion syndrome. Reebok reports that, when a player suffers his or her first concussion, he or she is one to two times more likely to receive a second one. If that second concussion occurs, he or she is two to three times more likely to suffer a third. After a third, that player is three to nine times more likely to receive a fourth.

More seriously, 47% of all athletes report having no symptoms when they’ve actually suffered a concussion. The Checklight steps in to make sure the athlete and those responsible for him or her know when the initial damage has been done.
