David Morrissey Hints That The Governor May Remain on ‘The Walking Dead’

Last season on “The Walking Dead,” the war between the prison survivors and the townspeople of Woodbury came to an end when The Governor (David Morrissey) massacred his own people and wandered off. During last Sunday’s episode, the Governor made his return appearance on the series.

While Morrissey was signed for another season of “The Walking Dead,” he also landed the lead in AMC’s upcoming sci-fi pilot, “Line of Sight.” Naturally, this has led to speculation that Morrissey’s character will finally be written off of “The Walking Dead” this season.

However, Morrissey was quick to dispute that idea during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly“I had a little hiatus on ‘The Walking Dead’ and we filmed that pilot,” explained Morrissey. “So I’m waiting to see. But I like ‘The Walking Dead.’ I am part of ‘The Walking Dead.’ I really hope to make it to season 5 of ‘The Walking Dead.’ I don’t know what’s going to happen —  that’s an AMC decision, not mine. But I really consider myself to be a ‘Walking Dead’ actor, and I consider myself to be the Governor and that’s where I am with this at the moment.”

“That was a nice little break for me, and I hope it happens,” added Morrissey. “But I don’t know how it will happen. It’s been made very clear to me that this is my show. ‘The Walking Dead’ is my show and I’m very proud of it and I want to be a part of that. Suffice it to say I am a ‘Walking Dead’ actor and that is the show that I employed to do, and the show I love.”

Despite Morrissey’s assertions, it has to be pointed out that “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman sang a similar tune when Jon Bernthal was cast as the lead in Frank Darabont’s “Mob City” (back when it was called “L.A. Noir”).

That’s not to say that Morrissey couldn’t scale back his appearances on “The Walking Dead” if “Line of Sight” goes forward. But it’s far more likely that Morrissey wouldn’t have been allowed to star in a TV pilot unless he wasn’t tied to “The Walking Dead” beyond this season.
