Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher is fighting for his life in a French hospital after suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident.
The 44-year-old German had been skiing with his 14-year-old son in the French Alps resort of Meribel where his head hit a rock on the slopes.
Schumacher was airlifted to a local hospital and then onto another in the city of Grenoble where a statement was released saying, he was “suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation”.
Although he was wearing a helmet at the time of the fall and was conscious during his initial hospital transportation, Schumacher fell into a coma sometime after. It is unclear what his current status is.
Former Ferrari teammates Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa were among the many that have voiced their support for the racing icon.
“What matters in life is to remember the good times and good laughs. We r praying for u…” Barrichello said via social media.
“I am praying for you my brother!! I hope you have a quick recovery!! God bless you Michael,” Massa said.
Schumacher won two world titles with Benetton and a further five with Ferrari (in succession) before retiring for a second time at the end of the 2012 season.
