Advance Review: All-New Marvel NOW Point One

So here we are again with another edition of Point One, Marvel’s yearly catalog for their upcoming new wave of books and storylines – so let’s do a quick rundown of who you’ll see and what they’re plugging.

First up is Loki: Agent of Asgard, where the now young-adult-and-sexy Loki is finagling his way through card sharks for specific prizes, then weaves his way between the rest of the stories.

Next is Silver Surfer, who is dating Dawn Greenwood of Earth and showing her fancy sights from throughout the galaxy and who winds up punching a shark.

Then we’ve got the All-New Invaders, who find themselves the target of Tanalth The Pursuer of the Kree Empire at the behest of the Kree Supreme Intelligence.

Black Widow is next, although it’s not an excerpt from the first issue, interestingly enough. But she does call somebody ‘dude,’ which is a little disconcerting.

Then we see the new Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, trying to juggle her nascent superhero life with her family’s expectations.

Finally, we’ve got Captain America and Maria Hill talking over the Avengers/SHIELD relationship while Cannonball and Sunspot monkey with A.I.M. shenanigans.

As usual, the Point One is just a quick sampler, but here’s what we can gather. The Dan Slott/Michael Allred Silver Surfer is going to be more fun than your standard heavily philosophical Surfer book. G. Willow Wilson & Adrian Alphona’s Ms. Marvel will be a pretty good teen book. Nathan Edmondson & Phil Noto’s Black Widow looks very cool.  James Robinson & Steve Pugh’s All-New Invaders will have interstellar repercussions and give them more to do than relive World War II again. Nick Spencer & Rags Morales setting up the tenuous deal between SHIELD and the Avengers to cooperate more will have a big effect on Avengers World. And the Al Ewing/Lee Garbett version of Loki will be hard to figure out, but probably a little more disposed towards doing the right thing than old-school Lok-dog was.

It certainly doesn’t stand alone as a story or anything like that, but if some quick hits are what you’re into, Point One will provide a nice little variety pack, and will hopefully turn you on to some books with a lot of potential.
