R.I.P. Russell Johnson (1924 – 2014)

Earlier today, TMZ confirmed that Russell Johnson passed away from natural causes in his home at the age of 89.

Born in 1924, Johnson fought in World War II before beginning his acting career in the early ‘50s in films like Column South, Tumbleweed and Ride Clear of Diablo. Johnson also starred in the iconic ‘50s sci-fi films This Island Earth and It Came From Outer Space.

However, Johnson was best known for playing Professor Roy Hinkley (or simply “The Professor”) for three seasons on “Gilligan’s Island,” a short-lived sitcom about castaways on a tropical island that became an international hit through decades of syndication.

Fellow “Gilligan’s Island” castmate, Dawn Wells wrote about Johnson’s passing on her facebook page: “My 2 favorite people are now gone.  The professor [passed] away this morning.  My heart is broken. Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and ‘the rest.'”

Russell’s post “Gilligan’s Island” career included appearances on “Ironside,” “The Invaders,” “Lassie,” “Gunsmoke” and “Santa Barbara.” However, the enduring popularity of “Gilligan’s Island” means that fans will always remember him as The Professor for decades to come.

CraveOnline extends our condolences and best wishes to Russell’s family, friends and fans all over the world.
