You know that Peter Parker is taking control of his body back from Dr. Octopus fairly soon, and writer Dan Slott is going back to the roots of Spider-Man to show us he hasn’t forgotten the one true Spidey. With the new five-issue limited series Amazing Spider-Man: Learning to Crawl, starting May 7 with artist Ramon Perez, Slott’s actually going to be jumping back to the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko era and exploring what Peter was doing in that weird netherworld between getting spider powers and fighting crime.
“If you read the early issues, he doesn’t start patrolling for crime until issue #3 or #4,” says Slott. “What’s he doing? Every adventure, he either stumbles across it, or he’s looking for money. ‘Oh! If only I could get pictures of the Vulture!’ He doesn’t wake up one morning and go, ‘I need to catch the Vulture.’ He sees a thing in the Daily Bugle requesting some photos for good money. ‘That’ll pay the rent! Maybe Aunt May won’t have to hock her jewelry.’ That path that he’s on will eventually lead him to being a hero. That’s the story. It’s his path to becoming the Spider-Man that we know. There’s a story that you haven’t heard.”
In fact, he’ll be using the ‘Year One’ miniseries to set up a new bad guy that will be a big part of the main book as well. There will also be covers from Alex Ross, and people tend to like that guy.
