Fox’s upcoming Batman prequel, “Gotham” is said to feature all of the classic Batman rogue’s gallery before they became supervillains. And apparently “Gotham” is already set to introduce some new villainous characters as well.
Jada Pinkett Smith has been cast as Fish Mooney, “an imposing, hotheaded and notoriously sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner” who is a new addition to the Batman mythos. Mooney is described as having an almost supernatural ability to “read people like an open book” and she is the employer of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), the man who will become The Penguin.
Smith’s earliest acting roles came on television in “True Colors,” “A Different World” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.” before she went on to star in several feature films including The Nutty Professor, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, Scream 2 and two of the Matrix films. More recently, Smith starred in the TNT original series, “Hawthorne”
“Gotham” will primarily focus on James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) during his early years in the Gotham City Police Department, opposite his partner and mentor, Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue). Other cast members include Sean Pertwee, Zabryna Guevara and Erin Richards.
Fox has already ordered “Gotham” straight-to-series, with a debut likely to come in Fall 2014.
