2014 Razzies Announced; Grown Ups 2 Goes Home Empty-Handed

The 2014 Golden Raspberry Awards – or “Razzies,” as they are affectionately known – are presented to the worst films of the previous year. Sort of. Although the majority of the films nominated and later awarded by the Razzies are generally considered be bad or at least disappointing movies, the awards ceremony has historically gone after some extremely low-hanging fruit, choosing last year to let Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 sweep the awards even though it wasn’t even the worst film of that franchise. (We suspect it was the mirror image of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King sweeping the Oscars as an apology for neglecting the other two.)

But while the Razzies love to make a big sweeping statement, they also love to pick on Adam Sandler, whose latest film Grown Ups 2 earned the most nominations overall and seemed primed to sweep the awards yet again, two years after another Sandler opus, Jack & Jill, won an unprecedented ten Razzie Awards. So it was a bit of a surprise to discover that the Razzies chose not to give Grown Ups 2 a single prize, perhaps to spread the field a bit, or perhaps to make it look like they’re not just picking on Adam Sandler all the time, or perhaps because they thought Grown Ups 2 wasn’t a bad movie after all.

But the 2014 Razzies winners aren’t a mindblowing lot filled with shockers. The Razzies still love to take down popular or at least well-publicized celebrities in notorious bombs, leading to multiple “wins” for Will and Jaden Smith for After Earth, a daring declaration that Kim Kardashian wasn’t a good actor in Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, a token admonishment to Tyler Perry for A Madea Christmas, one prominent award for the box office bomb The Lone Ranger, and three awards total to Movie 43, an anthology comedy that gave the Razzies the opportunity to award dozens of screenwriters and directors in a single stroke of their pens.
