Ron Washington Paid $200 MLB Fine — in Pennies

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington has always been a guy unafraid to speak his mind…and apparently, he’ll occasionally let his spare change do the talking for him.

As reported by Crave sports site NESN, Washington admits that back in 2011, he paid a $200 fine assessed by Major League — in pennies.  20,000 pennies, to be exact.

It all happened three years ago when the excitable Washington got bounced from a game following the ejection of Rangers star Adrian Beltre.

Ejections always bring fines — and Washington paid his debt, shipping 20,000 1-cent pieces off to MLB vice president of discipline Bob Watson.

In recounting the story, Washington explained that Watson questioned him about the penny payoff — and he responded to Watson’s incredulous inquiry.

“I didn’t have my checkbook. I wasn’t trying to be funny. Now go to the bank and put that in the (change) machine and get your $200.”

No…he wasn’t making a statement at all.  Uh-huh.  Just didn’t bring his checkbook…

Never mind the fact it took $45 to ship the pennies to Major League Baseball’s offices.  Washington was just paying with the cash he had on hand…

Right.

Priceless.

exas Rangers manager Ron Washington might have been ejected from a spring training game and fined two years ago, but it was MLB who ended up paying for it in the end. In 2011, Washington was fined $200 when he was tossed out of a game following Adrian Beltre’s ejection. Washington responded in an awesome manner to the fine, though, shipping a box of 20,000 pennies to Bob Watson, MLB vice president in charge of discipline. The manager, after arguing a call this past week, recalled the hilarious incident, to Stefan Stevenson of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram: Watson: “And you just had $200 in pennies hanging around? Washington: “Yes. Bob, I didn’t have my checkbook. I wasn’t trying to be funny. Now go to the bank and put that in the (change) machine and get your $200.” Washington added that the shipping cost him $45, but we’re guessing he doesn’t regret that decision one bit.
