SXSW 2014 VIDEO: The Spierig Brothers on Predestination

Predestination was one of the my favorite films to come out of SXSW 2014. The film, written and directed by The Spierig Brothers (Daybreakers), is an adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s short story All You Zombies, about a transgendered person trapped in a complex time paradox. Sarah Snook plays the film’s protagonist, and Ethan Hawke plays the time traveling government agent who offers an opportunity to right all the wrongs perpetuated by circumstance, or to discover the true meaning of predestination.

We already spoke to Ethan Hawke on video about Predestination, but now we’ve got an exclusive interview with The Spierig Brothers to talk about their daring new film.

In the video, the Spierig Brothers talk about the Timecop comparisons, why Robert Heinlein’s original short story is “the ultimate time paradox story,” the definition of a Predestination Paradox, what we’re allowed to say about the twisty-turny plot, why they describe the film as a “transgender mindbender,” the fact that the film’s transgender element didn’t affect its production, their speculation as to how the transgender hero will affect the film’s eventual reception, and how they expanded on Heinlein’s very short short story to make Predestination a feature-length film.
