Witcher 3 Dev Comments on 900p/720p Debate, Calls it “Just a rumor”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt looks to be one of most next-gen-seeming RPGs yet attempted, but that doesn’t mean developer CD Projekt RED is getting off the hook easy. If anything, so far the opposite seems true. The most recent example comes via a report from a Russian gaming site, claiming that Witcher 3 will run in 900p on PS4, and just 720p on Xbox One. Neither are ideal, and in the case of Xbox One, it further suggests that 1080p is simply out of its reach.

Of course, this is no official confirmation, and CD Projekt RED isn’t about to sit back while Russian blogs propagate false info. GameSpot reached out to the kind folks at CDPR for confirmation, and received the following statement from PR rep Michael Platkow-Gilewski.

It’s just a rumor and we are not commenting [on] rumors. As soon as we will be ready to announce Spec we will let you know.

Seems simple enough, but does it contain deeper meaning? Referring to the report as “just a rumor” suggests that it’s inaccurate. Otherwise, why not just issue a standard “no comment?” Of course, I could be reading into things.

Assuming CDPR doesn’t intend to run the game at 540p, then we can at least hold a reasonable hope for 1080p on PS4 if the report proves inaccurate. The report also refers to Witcher 3 as “very demanding,” going so far as to say that a single GTX 780Ti would just barely get the job done at 1080p on max settings. Demanding, sure, but a single card for max settings of a next-gen RPG sounds reasonable — even if it is a 780Ti.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, delivering its “living open world larger than any other in modern RPG history” sometime during February 2015. It sounds lofty, but if language like that doesn’t get you amped for a next-gen RPG, I’m not sure what will.
