On Thursday, April 24, I will be hosting a screening of Bride of Chucky, with guests Chucky creator and screenwriter Don Mancini, and stars Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif and Alexis Arquette at the MGN Five Star Cinemas in Glendale. The movie starts at 8PM. Come early for a happy hour. You have to be 21 or over for this one because tickets come with two beers from our sponsor Shock Top, and there will be a Bride of Chucky drinking game to put them to good use. This is something I’m hoping to do more often, to lead Q&As about my favorite films. Now when I moderate a Q&A, I really want to hear from you, so come ask your questions of Alexis, Brad, Jennifer or Don and I will call on the audience as soon as I see hands up. MGN is also my favorite theater to see the movies I don’t screen ahead of time. The theaters are lavish with plush, with reclining seats and good projection, and they have a full kitchen and bar for service during the movie. Of course you know from my coverage of Screamfest that I enjoy their activities so I’m happy to partner with them on Bride of Chucky.
I feel a bit of ownership over Chucky (Dourif) as a horror icon, because by the time I was old enough to start watching scary movies, Freddy and Jason were already 4-6 movies deep respectively. Child’s Play came out right when I could get in on the ground floor. Bride of Chucky is my favorite because it came in the post-Scream wave of self-referential horror. Chucky was always as funny as Freddy but Bride allowed him to satirize his own franchise and genre.
It also paid homage to horror classics, as you can gather from the title’s reference to Bride of Frankenstein. Chucky took a bride, his old girlfriend Tiffany (Tilly), whom he turned into a doll with the same voodoo he used in Child’s Play 1. Tiffany became an integral part of the franchise, which just premiered Curse of Chucky on home video last year. Arquette has one of my favorite roles for spoofing the goth scene of the late ‘90s,
