Meb Keflezighi won the Boston Marathon Monday morning, just one year after the terrorist bombings left three dead and more than 260 injured at the same finish line. How appropriate his finish must feel on the solemn anniversary, considering he is the first American male to win the marathon since 1983.
Keflezighi is a former Olympic medalist and New York City Marathon champion. The 38-year-old San Diego native ran the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the finish line on Boylston Street in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 37 seconds — about 5 minutes or so from the world record. The time was Keflezighi’s personal best, holding off Kenyan Wilson Chebet by 11 seconds. It is also the second-fastest time by an American in Boston Marathon history.
Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach was the last American to win the race; she took the women’s title in 1985; the last American man to win was Greg Meyer in 1983.
