Fans may have been sad to see him leave the “Doctor Who” television series, but Matt Smith has found a new career path in another long-running time travel series. The 11th Doctor has found his way into the cast of Terminator: Genesis, the new prequel/reboot that intends to reinvigorate the sci-fi/action franchise that made James Cameron’s career and gave Arnold Schwarzenegger the most iconic role of his career.
Although Terminator: Genesis has recast many of the most famous roles in the series – “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke is replacing Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, and Divergent‘s Jai Courtney is replacing Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese – Matt Smith is actually playing a new character. But, as Deadline reports, his role is a “major” one that will become even more prominent in the sequels.
If his character really is an entirely new creation, it would be kind of pointless to speculate about who it is. But screw it, let’s try: Matt Smith is probably playing Ezra Carmichael, a mild-mannered ice cream vendor whose frequently spurned affections for Sarah Connor are exploited to save the universe when – SPOILER ALERT – Kyle Reese dies before he can impregnate her with mankind’s future savior John Connor. Suddenly it’s up to Ezra to help save the future by fighting off the time-traveling Terminator and convincing Sarah to have his child for the good of all humanity.
That, or he’s playing a new Terminator or the guy who invented Skynet or something like that. We’re cool with whatever.
Terminator: Genesis hits theaters on July 1, 2015.
