Five years ago, Marc Guggenheim’s Young X-Men came to an end. In the interim, Guggenheim has found renewed success on TV as an executive producer of “Arrow.” However, Guggenheim is heading back to Marvel and making a return to the X-Men franchise.
Marvel has announced that Brian Wood will be leaving the adjective-less X-Men with issue 17. Guggenheim will take over the title with X-Men # 18 in a four issue storyline that will take the all-female team of X-Men (Storm, Jubilee, Monet, Psylocke and Rachel) on an adventure in outer space.
While speaking to IGN, Guggenheim cited the classic Chris Claremont and Paul Smith X-Men run as inspiration for his first story on the book. “The Brood Saga grabbed me as an early reader,” said Guggenheim. “I didn’t want to do another Brood story, because Chris Gage had done ‘Children of the Brood,’ which was fantastic. But I liked the idea of taking this all-female team of X-Men and putting them in outer space. In doing something that was a little different than ‘The X-Men meet Star Wars,’ this was more along the lines of “The X-Men meets Aliens.’ It’s darker, it’s a little more mysterious, and it’s scarier.”
Guggenheim also added that his X-Men title will retain the all-female cast and it will also feature the return of Deathbird, who hasn’t been seen since she was put in a coma back in X-Men: Kingbreaker.
X-Men # 18 will be released in August. The art team for the issue has not yet been announced.
